Risk-based inspection allows owner-operators to direct inspection resources toward the equipment where the combination of probability and consequence of failure is greatest. This five-day course explains the RBI methodology from first principles through to a documented inspection plan. Participants examine how damage mechanisms, inspection effectiveness and process conditions drive probability of failure, how flammable, toxic and business consequences are estimated, and how the resulting risk is presented, managed and reassessed. Worked examples demonstrate the qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative approaches described in API RP 580 and API RP 581.
Who Should Attend
- Fixed equipment and piping inspectors
- Mechanical integrity, corrosion and materials engineers
- Inspection planners and reliability engineers in refining and petrochemicals
- Plant managers and process safety personnel who review inspection strategy
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the principles of risk and the role of RBI within a mechanical integrity program
- Distinguish qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative RBI approaches
- Identify credible damage mechanisms and assess inspection effectiveness
- Estimate probability and consequence of failure using API RP 581 concepts
- Construct and interpret a risk matrix and define risk targets
- Develop an inspection plan with methods, coverage and intervals based on risk
- Describe data requirements, reassessment triggers and documentation of an RBI study
Course Outline
- Module 1 — Fundamentals of Risk: risk definition, risk assessment matrices and risk acceptance.
- Module 2 — RBI Program Planning: objectives, scope, team roles, data gathering and the API RP 580 work process.
- Module 3 — Damage Mechanisms and Failure Modes: thinning, cracking, metallurgical and mechanical damage and their screening.
- Module 4 — Probability of Failure: generic failure frequencies, damage factors and inspection effectiveness.
- Module 5 — Consequence of Failure: release scenarios, flammable, toxic, environmental and financial consequences.
- Module 6 — Types of Inspection and Reporting: inspection methods, coverage, effectiveness categories and documentation.
- Module 7 — Inspection Planning and Risk Management: inspection intervals, mitigation and reassessment.

Standards & References
Course content draws on API RP 580, Risk-Based Inspection; API RP 581, Risk-Based Inspection Methodology; and BS EN 16991:2018, Risk-Based Inspection Framework. Participants are introduced to the scope and application of each document; the current edition should always be consulted for project work.
Assessment & Certification
The program comprises 40 contact hours (5 days) of instruction. Assessment consists of a written examination including calculation-based questions and a case-study exercise in which candidates develop a risk ranking and inspection plan. This is an independent IIME training program and does not confer an API individual certification. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code, which can be verified online.
