Compressed, liquefied, and dissolved gases present a combination of stored-energy, toxic, flammable, and oxidizing hazards that demand rigorous technical control. This course prepares technicians to work safely with gas pressure systems, covering legislation and standards, system management, cylinder bundles and valves, low-pressure storage vessels, and safe filling operations. Participants develop the inspection and maintenance competence needed to identify defects, verify safety devices, and keep systems within their safe operating limits. The course reflects United States regulatory requirements while drawing on the ISO standards widely used in gas equipment design and testing.

Who Should Attend

  • Gas filling plant operators and technicians
  • Maintenance technicians responsible for compressed air and industrial gas systems
  • Welding and fabrication supervisors managing oxygen and fuel-gas systems
  • HSE officers overseeing gas storage and distribution areas

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the physical and chemical hazards of compressed, liquefied, and cryogenic gases
  • Apply OSHA, NFPA 55, and NFPA 58 requirements to storage, handling, and use
  • Describe the components and safe operating limits of a pressure system
  • Carry out pre-fill inspection and safe filling of cylinders and cylinder bundles
  • Inspect and maintain cylinder valves, regulators, and pressure-relief devices
  • Specify compressed-air purity classes using ISO 8573-1
  • Prepare inspection and maintenance records that demonstrate compliance

Course Outline

  • Module 1 — HSE Awareness and Risk Assessment: gas hazards, oxygen enrichment and deficiency, and emergency response
  • Module 2 — Legislation and Standards: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.253, NFPA 55, NFPA 58, and applicable ISO standards
  • Module 3 — Pressure Systems Management: written schemes, safe operating limits, and protective devices
  • Module 4 — Cylinders, Bundles, and Valves: construction, marking, ISO 10961 bundles, and ISO 10297 valves
  • Module 5 — Vessels and Low-Pressure Storage Tanks: bulk storage, vaporizers, and pressure-relief arrangements
  • Module 6 — Filling Operations: filling procedures, overfill prevention, and leak testing
  • Module 7 — Inspection and Maintenance: visual inspection, functional testing, and record keeping

Standards & References

ISO 10961:2019 — Gas cylinders: cylinder bundles, design, manufacture, testing and inspection; ISO 8573 (series) — Compressed air: contaminants and purity classes; ISO 10297:2014 — Gas cylinders: cylinder valves, specification and type testing; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.253 — Oxygen-fuel gas welding and cutting; NFPA 55 — Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Fluids Code; NFPA 58 — Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code.

Assessment & Certification

Candidate competence is evaluated through a written examination and a practical assessment covering system inspection, valve and regulator checks, and a simulated filling operation. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code that can be confirmed online. The program comprises 40 contact hours (5 days).
