Accurate, well-organized drawings remain the primary means of communicating engineering intent between designers, fabricators, and inspectors. This course develops proficient use of Autodesk AutoCAD for 2D drawing production, with an emphasis on precision, drawing organization, and productivity. Participants progress from workspace customization and object creation to advanced editing, layer management, annotation, dimensioning, reusable content, and output. Exercises are drawn from mechanical and piping drafting practice so that skills transfer directly to engineering work, and the course encourages consistent application of company and industry CAD standards.
Who Should Attend
- Engineering technicians and drafters new to AutoCAD
- Mechanical, piping, and plant engineers who prepare or revise drawings
- Technical staff migrating from manual drafting or other CAD platforms
- Document control personnel working with CAD files
Learning Outcomes
- Configure a custom workspace and drawing template for engineering work
- Create and select geometry precisely using object snaps, tracking, and coordinate entry
- Edit drawings efficiently using grips, modify commands, and productivity tools
- Organize content with layers, properties, and layer management tools
- Apply text, dimensions, and annotation scaling consistent with drafting standards
- Create and insert blocks and transfer content between drawings
- Set up layouts and viewports and produce scaled plots and PDF output
Course Outline
- Module 1 — Interface and Custom Workspace: user interface, workspaces, templates, and drawing settings
- Module 2 — Object Creation and Selection: drawing commands, coordinate systems, and selection methods
- Module 3 — Accurate Positioning: object snaps, polar and object tracking, and precision input
- Module 4 — Editing with Grips and Modify Tools: move, copy, trim, extend, fillet, arrays, and grip editing
- Module 5 — Layers and Properties: layer standards, additional layer tools, and property control
- Module 6 — Annotation and Dimensioning: text styles, dimension styles, and annotative scaling
- Module 7 — Blocks and Drawing Content: blocks, copying and pasting between drawings, and DesignCenter
- Module 8 — Layouts and Output: paper space, viewports, plot styles, and publishing
Standards & References
Autodesk AutoCAD 2020 (skills apply to subsequent releases); ASME Y14.100 — Engineering Drawing Practices and the U.S. National CAD Standard are referenced for drawing organization and layering conventions.
Assessment & Certification
Candidate competence is evaluated through a written examination and a practical drawing project in which each candidate produces a fully dimensioned, plotted engineering drawing. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code that can be confirmed online. The program comprises 40 contact hours (5 days).
