Choke and control valves regulate flow and pressure from the reservoir through the production system and are exposed to some of the most severe service conditions in oil and gas operations, including high differential pressure, erosion by sand, cavitation, and flashing. This Level 1 course develops a sound understanding of how external sleeve chokes and control valves work, how they are sized and selected, and how they should be installed, operated, and maintained. Participants study fluid properties and flow fundamentals, pressure drop and flow equations, trim designs, and common failure modes, and they relate each topic to field decisions on valve selection, set-up, and repair.
Who Should Attend
- Production and wellsite operators
- Instrument and mechanical maintenance technicians
- Junior production and facilities engineers
- Valve shop technicians and field service personnel
- Facilities engineers specifying valves for new projects and modifications
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the physical properties of production fluids that affect valve performance

Standards & References
API Spec 6A — Wellhead and Tree Equipment; API Spec 16C — Choke and Kill Equipment; ASME B16.5 — Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings. ANSI/ISA-75.01.01 (IEC 60534-2-1) is referenced for control valve flow sizing equations.
Assessment & Certification
Candidate competence is evaluated through a written examination and a practical exercise in valve sizing and choke trim inspection. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code that can be confirmed online. The program comprises 24 contact hours (3 days).
