CredentialIIME Certificate of Training

High-density polyethylene piping is widely used for water, gas distribution, mining, and industrial service because of its corrosion resistance, flexibility, and fully fused leak-free joints. Joint integrity, however, depends entirely on correct procedure and disciplined execution. This course trains fusion operators to handle and prepare PE pipe and fittings, perform equipment checks, and produce butt fusion, socket fusion, and electrofusion joints under controlled parameters. Participants learn to recognize joint defects, record fusion data, and apply the inspection and testing methods used to confirm joint quality in the field.

Who Should Attend

  • Polyethylene pipe fusion operators and trainee welders
  • Pipeline and utility construction crews
  • Piping supervisors and QA/QC inspectors overseeing PE installations
  • Maintenance personnel responsible for PE water and gas networks

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the material characteristics and pressure ratings of PE pipes and fittings
  • Apply correct practices for supply, storage, handling, and installation of PE pipe
  • Perform pre-jointing equipment and machine checks
  • Produce butt fusion joints using controlled heating, changeover, and cooling parameters
  • Produce socket fusion and electrofusion joints, including scraping and alignment
  • Inspect completed joints visually and identify common defects and their causes
  • Record fusion parameters and complete joint traceability documentation

Course Outline

  • Module 1 — Characteristics of PE Pipes and Fittings: PE grades, SDR, pressure rating, and fitting types
  • Module 2 — Supply, Handling, and Installation: storage, transport, coil handling, and installation methods
  • Module 3 — Pre-Jointing Equipment and Machine Checks: heater plates, facers, generators, and calibration
  • Module 4 — Butt Fusion Welding: procedure parameters, bead formation, and ISO 21307 and ASTM F2620 practice
  • Module 5 — Socket Fusion Welding: tools, depth marking, and heating times
  • Module 6 — Electrofusion Welding: surface scraping, clamping, fusion control units, and barcode data
  • Module 7 — Inspection, Testing, and Records: visual criteria, destructive tests, and fusion logs

Standards & References

ISO 12176-2 and ASTM F1055 are referenced for electrofusion.

Assessment & Certification

Candidate competence is evaluated through a written examination and a practical assessment in which each candidate produces butt fusion and electrofusion joints for visual and destructive evaluation. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code that can be confirmed online. The program comprises 40 contact hours (5 days).
