Accurate fit-up and installation are essential to piping systems that are safe, leak-free and easy to maintain. This five-day course develops the skills required for pipe fitting, installation, joint assembly, alignment and testing in process and utility piping. Participants learn to read piping drawings and isometrics, identify pipe materials, dimensions, fittings and valves, and prepare pipe for welded, flanged and threaded connections. Practical sessions cover measurement, cutting, beveling, fit-up, alignment tolerances, flange assembly, supports and pressure testing, with attention to safe working practice throughout.
Who Should Attend
- Pipefitters and pipefitter apprentices
- Mechanical technicians and plant maintenance personnel
- Piping supervisors and foremen
- QA/QC personnel who inspect piping fabrication and installation
Learning Outcomes
- Read and interpret piping drawings, isometrics and bills of materials
- Identify pipe materials, schedules, fittings and valves by standard designation
- Measure, cut and bevel pipe and prepare joints for assembly
- Fit up and align welded, flanged and threaded joints within tolerance
- Install piping supports and assemble flanged joints correctly
- Prepare for and witness hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure tests
Course Outline
- Module 1 — Piping Systems and Drawings: plans, isometrics, P&IDs and symbols.
- Module 2 — Pipe Materials and Dimensions: materials, NPS, schedules and markings.
- Module 3 — Pipes, Fittings and Valves: ASME B16 fittings, flanges, gaskets and valves.
- Module 4 — Pipe Fabrication and Preparation: cutting, beveling, cleaning and layout.
- Module 5 — Fit-Up and Alignment: tolerances, tack welding, spool fabrication and field fit-up.
- Module 6 — Joint Assembly and Supports: flanged and threaded joints, hangers and supports.
- Module 7 — Pressure Testing and Safety: hydrostatic and pneumatic testing and safe practice.
- Module 8 — Inspection and Handover: inspection hold points, punch lists, records and handover for commissioning.
Standards & References
Course content draws on ASME B16 standards for pipe flanges, fittings and valves (including ASME B16.5, B16.9 and B16.11); API 570 (Piping Inspection Code); and ISO 15649 (Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries — Piping), with reference to ASME B31.3 (Process Piping). Participants are introduced to the scope and application of each document; the current edition should always be consulted for project work.
Assessment & Certification
The program comprises 40 contact hours (5 days) of instruction. Assessment consists of a written examination and a practical assessment in which candidates fabricate and fit up a small piping spool to a supplied isometric drawing. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code, which can be verified online.
