The performance of a cathodic protection system is determined as much by the quality of its installation as by its design. This four-day course prepares field personnel to install galvanic and impressed current CP systems correctly and safely. Participants study how CP works and how each component contributes to system performance, then learn the practical requirements for anode and groundbed installation, cable routing and connections, exothermic welding and coating repair, test stations, rectifiers and electrical isolation. The course concludes with energizing, commissioning measurements and the installation records that designers and operators rely on.
Who Should Attend
- CP installation technicians and crew leaders
- Pipeline and utility construction personnel
- Electrical technicians working on CP rectifiers
- Construction inspectors overseeing CP installations
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the principles of galvanic and impressed current cathodic protection
- Identify CP system components and their installation requirements
- Install galvanic anodes, deep and shallow groundbeds and backfill correctly
- Make durable cable connections using exothermic welding and coat them properly
- Install test stations, bonds and isolating joints and verify isolation
- Perform basic commissioning measurements and complete installation records
Course Outline
- Module 1 — Cathodic Protection Principles: corrosion cells, galvanic and impressed current systems.
- Module 2 — System Components: anodes, backfill, cables, rectifiers, junction boxes and test stations.
- Module 3 — Galvanic Anode Installation: sizing, placement, backfill and connection.
- Module 4 — Impressed Current Groundbeds: shallow and deep anode beds, venting and cable protection.
- Module 5 — Connections and Coating Repair: exothermic welding, mechanical connections and coating of attachments.
- Module 6 — Isolation and Test Stations: isolating joints, bonds and test point installation.
- Module 7 — Energizing, Commissioning and Records: rectifier setup, initial measurements, safety and as-built documentation.
Standards & References
Course content draws on AMPP SP0169 (Control of External Corrosion on Underground or Submerged Metallic Piping Systems, formerly NACE SP0169); ISO 15589-1 (Cathodic Protection of Pipeline Systems — On-Land Pipelines); and BS EN 12954 (Cathodic Protection of Buried or Immersed Metallic Structures). Participants are introduced to the scope and application of each document; the current edition should always be consulted for project work.
Assessment & Certification
The program comprises 32 contact hours (4 days) of instruction. Assessment consists of a written examination and a practical assessment covering anode connection, exothermic welding, test station wiring and commissioning measurements. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code, which can be verified online.
