Pallet racking failures can cause progressive collapse, serious injury and major loss of inventory, yet most are preceded by visible damage that a competent inspection would have detected. This three-day course trains personnel to inspect adjustable static pallet racking systematically and to make sound decisions about damage and continued use. Participants study warehouse configuration, rack components and how loads are carried to the floor, then learn to measure upright and beam damage, apply action levels, verify load notices and installation tolerances, and plan maintenance and repairs in line with recognized European practice and its US counterparts.
Who Should Attend
- Warehouse and distribution center managers and supervisors
- Persons designated as responsible for storage equipment safety
- Facility maintenance personnel and in-house rack inspectors
- Health and safety officers and insurance risk surveyors
Learning Outcomes
- Describe common warehouse and racking configurations and their load paths
- Identify pallet racking components and explain their structural function
- Measure upright and beam damage and classify it using a traffic-light action-level system
- Verify load notices, beam connector locks, anchors and installation tolerances
- Recognize operational causes of damage and recommend preventive measures
- Prepare inspection reports with prioritized actions and repair recommendations
Course Outline
- Module 1 — Warehouse Configuration: layouts, aisle widths, materials handling equipment interaction and rack types.
- Module 2 — Pallet Racking Components: uprights, frames, bracing, beams, connectors, locks, base plates and anchors.
- Module 3 — Pallet Racking Functioning: load paths, capacity, beam deflection, frame stability and load notices.
- Module 4 — Damage Assessment: measurement methods, permissible deformation and green, amber and red action levels.
- Module 5 — Inspection Regime: daily checks, periodic in-house inspections and expert inspections.
- Module 6 — Pallet Racking Maintenance: repairs, component replacement, reconfiguration control and records.
Standards & References
Course content draws on EN 15512 (Steel Static Storage Systems — Adjustable Pallet Racking Systems — Principles for Structural Design) and EN 15635 (Steel Static Storage Systems — Application and Maintenance of Storage Equipment), published nationally as BS EN 15635 and UNE-EN 15635, with reference to US practice under ANSI MH16.1. Participants are introduced to the scope and application of each document; the current edition should always be consulted for project work.
Assessment & Certification
The program comprises 24 contact hours (3 days) of instruction. Assessment consists of a written examination and a practical assessment in which candidates inspect a racking installation, measure damage and complete an inspection report. Successful candidates receive an IIME Certificate of Training bearing a unique verification code, which can be verified online.
