The International Institute of Mechanical Engineering ("IIME") is a US-based personnel training and certification body serving all mechanical disciplines. IIME develops certification schemes, accredits training centers worldwide to deliver its programs, and issues credentials that employers, clients and regulators can verify independently.
IIME certification activities are designed to be fair, valid, reliable and impartial, and are aligned with the principles of ISO/IEC 17024 for bodies certifying persons. The detailed rules are set out in the Certification Policy, which takes precedence over this overview in the event of any difference.
Two Types of IIME Credential
IIME issues two distinct types of credential, which serve different purposes.
| Feature | Certificate of Training | Personnel Certification |
|---|---|---|
| What it confirms | Attendance at and completion of a defined IIME course, including any end-of-course assessment | Demonstrated competence against a published certification scheme |
| Basis | Course completion | Eligibility review, controlled examination and, where required, practical assessment |
| Decision | Issued on completion of the course requirements | Made by IIME personnel independent of the candidate's training |
| Validity | Records completion on a stated date | Time-limited, normally three years, subject to recertification |
| Ongoing obligations | None | Code of conduct, proper use of marks, surveillance and renewal |
| Verification | Both carry a unique code verifiable at ii-me.us/verify | |
A Certificate of Training is evidence of learning. It is a common prerequisite for certification, but it does not by itself attest that the holder is competent to perform work independently. A personnel certification is a competency-based credential: it confirms that, at the time of the certification decision, the individual met the knowledge, skill and experience requirements of a specific scheme, and it remains valid only while the holder continues to meet those requirements.
Credential Levels
Where a discipline supports progression, IIME certification schemes are structured in three levels defined by the responsibility the holder is expected to exercise. The specific prerequisites for each scheme and level are published in the scheme documents and on the relevant course pages.
Technician
Performs defined tasks in accordance with written procedures and instructions, under the supervision of a Level 2 or Level 3 holder. Candidates are expected to have completed the relevant foundation training and to have initial supervised exposure to the discipline.
Specialist / Inspector
Sets up and carries out work independently, interprets and evaluates results against applicable codes, standards and specifications, prepares reports, and guides Level 1 personnel. Candidates are expected to have completed intermediate training and to have accumulated substantial documented practical experience in the discipline.
Senior Specialist
Takes technical responsibility for methods, procedures and programs; selects techniques; establishes and approves written procedures; and oversees the qualification and performance of other personnel. Candidates are expected to hold the relevant Level 2 credential or equivalent standing and to demonstrate extensive experience, including responsibility for the work of others.
Not every scheme uses all three levels. Some awareness and single-scope programs lead only to a Certificate of Training or to a single certification level.
The Certification Pathway
Every IIME personnel certification follows the same six-step pathway, regardless of discipline or the training center through which the candidate applies.
- Application and eligibility The candidate applies for a specific scheme and level and submits evidence of education, training and experience. IIME reviews the application and may verify documents with issuing institutions or employers. Inspection and NDT schemes also require a valid vision acuity test.
- Training The candidate completes the training required by the scheme, delivered by IIME or by an accredited training center, and receives a Certificate of Training on completion.
- Examination The candidate sits a written or computer-based examination under controlled, invigilated conditions in accordance with the Examination Integrity & Anti-Fraud Policy.
- Practical assessment Where the scheme requires it, the candidate demonstrates practical skills on representative tasks or specimens, assessed against documented criteria by a qualified examiner.
- Certification decision IIME personnel who were not involved in training or examining the candidate review the complete record and decide whether to grant certification.
- Verification, surveillance and renewal The certificate is published on the verification service. The holder maintains it through continued practice and professional development and renews it before expiry.
Completing a course does not guarantee certification. The certification decision is made separately from training and is based solely on objective evidence of competence. No training center is authorized to promise or guarantee a certification outcome.
Disciplines Covered
IIME schemes and courses are organized into eight disciplines. Available schemes, levels and courses within each discipline are listed in the course catalog.
- Inspection, Testing & NDT — non-destructive testing methods, inspection of equipment and materials, and interpretation of results against codes and standards.
- Mechanical Maintenance & Asset Reliability — maintenance practice, condition monitoring, root cause analysis and reliability management of rotating and static equipment.
- Welding, Fabrication & Piping — welding processes and inspection, fabrication practice, and piping design, installation and testing.
- Surface Protection & Corrosion Control — corrosion mechanisms, protective coatings, surface preparation and cathodic protection.
- HSE & Industrial Safety — workplace health, safety and environmental management, hazard identification and risk control.
- Oil & Gas Operations — upstream, midstream and downstream operations, process equipment and operational integrity.
- Engineering Design & CAD — mechanical design principles, drafting standards and computer-aided design.
- Refrigeration & Environmental Awareness — refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, safe refrigerant handling and related environmental responsibilities.
Impartiality and Governance
Because IIME both delivers training and certifies persons, it maintains structural safeguards to keep the two activities separate:
- examination content is developed and controlled separately from training materials, and training staff do not have access to live examination items;
- an individual who has trained a candidate within the preceding two years may not examine that candidate or take part in the certification decision;
- all examiners, decision-makers and committee members declare their interests and are removed from any activity in which a conflict exists;
- pass marks are set through a documented standard-setting process and are never adjusted to meet quotas or to favor a training center; and
- accredited training centers are audited, including through unannounced visits to examinations they host.
These safeguards are described in full in the Impartiality & Conflict of Interest Policy. Candidates and certificate holders may challenge any certification decision under the Appeals & Complaints Policy.
Maintaining Your Credential
A personnel certification is a continuing commitment rather than a one-time achievement. To keep a certification valid, the holder must:
- observe the validity period — unless a scheme specifies otherwise, certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue;
- continue to practice — maintain evidence of continued professional activity in the certified discipline;
- pursue continuing professional development (CPD) — keep knowledge current through refresher training, technical study and other recognized development activities;
- apply for recertification before expiry — submit the recertification application with supporting evidence and, where the scheme requires it, pass a recertification examination; and
- uphold professional conduct — comply with the Code of Professional Conduct & Ethics and use the certificate and IIME marks only within the certified scope.
Certificates that are not renewed are shown as expired on the verification service. Holders of an expired certificate may be required to complete the full certification process again. IIME may suspend or withdraw a certificate where the holder no longer meets the scheme requirements or has breached IIME rules.
Digital Verification
Every IIME credential, whether a Certificate of Training or a personnel certification, carries a unique certificate number, a verification code and a QR code. Anyone may confirm a credential's authenticity and status at ii-me.us/verify by entering the number or code, or by scanning the QR code. The verification service displays the holder's name, the credential title, its status (valid, expired, suspended or withdrawn) and its validity dates.
The online verification result is the authoritative record of an IIME credential. A paper or electronic copy alone is not proof of current status.
For Employers and Relying Parties
Organizations that rely on IIME credentials when hiring, assigning work or accepting contractor personnel should:
- verify every credential at ii-me.us/verify at the time of reliance and, for long assignments, periodically thereafter;
- confirm that the credential type, level and scope match the work to be performed, and distinguish a Certificate of Training from a personnel certification;
- recognize that certification does not replace the employer's own responsibility to authorize personnel for specific tasks, equipment and site conditions; and
- report any credential that cannot be verified, or whose details do not match the verification result, so that IIME can investigate.
